Nonbinary writer and advocate Brandon Kyle Goodman adds purpose to his punch lines. That's what Brandon Kyle Goodman has been doing as Walter, an animated queer lovebug, on Big Mouth and its new spin-off Human Resources, which premieres March 18 on Netflix. Being Black and queer definitely does. His position allows for more LGBTQ+ and Black voices to be heard, and he takes on the task with joy. Goodman's new book is part memoir . I don't know. Still a student of his craft, Goodman observes the changes of the industry. I started the mentorship program in 2020 with the help of my bosses, Mark [Levin], Jen [Flackett], Andrew [Goldberg] and Nick [Kroll]. CHANG: When it came to being both Black and gay, there was something that you wrote that really stuck with me. Brandon Kyle Goodman's new book is called "You Gotta Be You: How To Embrace This Messy Life And Step Into Who You Really Are." Human Resources will premiere its second and final season on Netflix on June 9, 2023. But I realized that was always kind of this thing that I always was trying to go back to - was, how do I perform masculinity? A force to be reckoned with, he moves through the industry fearlessly, ready to challenge the narrative of what it means to be both Black and queer. Their new book, "You Gotta Be You," is an ode to shaking off the expectations of others and tossing out the boxes that society nudges us all into. But I still think we get to say, Hey, this thing, you might want to look at it through a different lens. How challenging was it write about your own story so honestly? CHANG: Well, I want to end on a pretty basic but important question. I learned about the Innocence Project from Korey Wise, who is one of the "Central Park Five," who was wrongly convicted of a brutal crime and spent 12 years in prison until he was finally exonerated. He resides in an apartment in LA, and he is happily working away on many different projects. CHANG: I mean, because I related to a lot of this sort of racism that you were talking about inside queer spaces because I feel it in straight spaces. An incredible actress and writer and maybe one of my greatest inspirations, but also a source of one of my greatest pains. Yeah, I think there was this sentiment out there that, Its just jokes, how could it be harmful? So don't be afraid to get knocked down. CHANG: That is the work. Goodman, a voice actor and writer on the hilariously raunchy animated shows Big Mouth and Human Resources (whose credits also include Feel the Beat and Curb Your Enthusiasm), grew up in a religious household in New York and came out as gay in college. Were all people, were all trying to figure [things] out. And suddenly I felt I was about to be an outsider yet again.. I dont find value in arguing or engaging with that. Television has not always been an affirming place for Black queer voices, but Brandon Kyle Goodman is changing that one punch line at a time. We just had River Butcher on this podcast and we were talking about trans issues and they/them pronouns and all of this stuff that has become sort of a punching bag in comedy. His fans arent sure what to think of him outside of his voice and his role on television, but that doesnt mean they havent spent time trying to figure out who he is. And writing about that was all the things you think it is, sad and tragic and devastating and painful and healing and transformative. We bring them together so they can finally have a real conversation about race, and we can all learn how to . Well, I'm just going to dive right in to the guts of this book because CHANG: You start from a really upfront place. I hopethat Black, POC, and queer people will take up more space. Because, to me, all this talk of equity and equality and inclusion is beautiful, but [what] if theres no system put in place to have people succeed? Watch! People say, yas (ph), queen. GOODMAN: Because, you know, everyone wants the idea of queerness and wants the performance of it but not always the people. I want us to have real tangible power. Theres nothing he is not willing to discuss with those who are curious or want to learn. That's the journey. People were galvanizing in the streets in such a massive way. And then you trick yourself into thinking that they are. And we really try to push that, which is why it's exciting that [the trans character] Natalie comes back on Human Resources. Our criminal justice system is corrupt and disproportionately locks up Black and brown people. And so there is a feeling that I felt personally inside of those white queer spaces where there is a performance that you're expected to do. I'm also committed to getting Black artists access to the resources they need to thrive in the industry, so I've started a charitable arm of Black Folx which will offer mentorship, provide small scholarships, and put on events with the intention of empowering and amplifying Black voices. As a person going out into the world, like, what do you value, and what do you want to stand for? Its where work took him. We're required to fit into boxes based on our race, gender, sexuality, and other parts of our identities, being told by others how we should behave, who we should date, or what we should be interested in. You know, I think that as a kid, when you're, like, you know, 2, 3 and you're just playing, people kind of let you do whatever you want. But the community in which all those things come from, which I would say is Black and brown queer folks, aren't protected and aren't valued and aren't validated inside of that. My episode, "Hers Was a World of One," was about a gay couple adopting a child from a homeless woman and how the three of them formed an untraditional family filled with love, struggle, and hope.
